I first stumbled across this book several weeks ago, and was immediately struck by how well produced it is. The quality of the covers and the pages far surpasses that of most modern books, and inside it was beautifully illustrated at the header of every chapter - which considering the fact some chapter are only 2 pages long means there are dozens and dozens of illustrations.
Intrigued by the look of the book, I bought a copy to read, and was immediately hooked. It is a wonderfully written book, and reminds me of books from the 1950's and 1960's in its gentle tone and pace. There are none of the ghosts, goblin, monsters or whatever else inhabit all modern childrens books. This is a childrens books with a real feelgood factor - a tale which stands in the face of all that is wrong with the modern world, and reminds us what it is that is really important.
The main character, Stephen, is living a mundane life in the grey wastelands of London, when a letter from a solicitor, inviting him to a meeting, changes his life forever. His future lies not in London, but on the South West coast of England, in the green and lush valleys of Cornwall.
To quote..........
"Locked away behind the great gates hidden from the world for almost a century lies a magical Cornish valley.
Follow Stephen through the gates as he uncovers the valley's strange secrets which he must confront alone." |
