First edition, first printing of the UK hardback

Authors debut novel, "Follow Me Down" by Julie Hearn. I read the proof for this title several months ago, and have been eagerly awaiting its arrival ever since. The author is a former journalist, who went on to study creative writing with Philip Pullman no less - in fact Pullman has proof read this novel, and has given it a very favourable review..........high praise indeed!

To quote......

"Come along down, sir. Step this way. Only a shilling, sir, to view the Changeling Child. Only a shilling to behold the strangest work of nature that ever was. Come Sir, Follow me down.

Something odd is going on in the basement of an old house in east London. Tom, visiting his gran, finds a gap forming and the voices are calling him.......

Tom takes a leap into the early eighteenth century - to a time when 'monsters' like the Bendy Man and Gorilla Woman appeared at Bartholomew Fair....a time when doctors paid a high price for unusual bodies to experiment on - and 'monsters' were prime targets.

Can Tom save the Giant? Will he and his friends rescue him from a fate worse than death? It is a desperate race against time. Meanwhile, Tom has problems of his own to contend with. Illness. Family secrets. A rift between his mum and his gran.

In the present, as well as the past, Tom must learn to look beyond appearances.

Come Sir. Follow me down.........."

I really enjoyed reading this novel, and sincerely hope there is a follow up - despite the fact there is no talk of a trilogy, or a series, the ending certainly sets it up for at least one more book - fingers crossed!! The world the author creates is so real - both the modern day London which we know so well, and the 18th century London which is so vividly described, that you can almost smell the air and hear the sounds of everday life. Likewise the characters - Tom has a life in the modern world which is so normal, and fraught with so many of the problems of modern living, we can really associate with him - yet the life he lives beyond 'the gap' is so fanciful and exciting, we can but hope!!
