First edition, first printing. UK hardback of a great new title from an extremely talented author.

Of all of the childrens books I have read so far this year, this has to be one of my favourites..............magical, mystical, dark, gothic, and totally compelling! Being a big fan of anything with a gothic flavour, this book was certainly one I couldn't wait to get my hands on - and it didn't disappoint - to me its one of the most readable books of the genre since Chris Woodings awesome "The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray".

This is the authors 4th novel, with the previous 3 having been exceptional reads - his debut was "Floodland" which won the Branford Boase award for the best first children's novel of 2000. His follow up titles, "Witch Hill" and "The Dark Horse" having been equally as successful, with the latter nominated for the Carnegie Medal and shortlisted for the Guardian Childrens Fiction Award.

The book is beautifully produced, with brown boards, blue lettering and a stitched in bookmark. The dustjackets is also of the highest quality - a wonderfully evocative illustration from times gone by.

To quote.....

"The Days between Christmas and New Year are the dead days, when spirits roam and magic shifts restlessly just between the surface of our lives. A lot can happen in the dead days.

There is a magician called Valerian who must save his own life, or pay the price for the pact he made with evil so many years ago. But alchemy and sorcery are no match against the demonic power pursuing him. Helping him is his servant Boy, a child with no name and no past, given to Valerian by Fate when he fell from his hiding place in an old church. And the quick-witted Willow is with them as they dig in death-fields at midnight, and are swept into the sprawling blackness of a subterannean city on a journey from which there is no escape. Unknown to any of them it is Boy who holds the key to all their destinies. His revelations will be shocking.

Set in dark, dangerous cities in the frozen countryside of a distant time and place".
