When I read the first few pages of this book, it was obvious it was something really, really special....and so it proved. Every new page was a treat - the thought and imagination that has gone into part one of this trilogy is astounding - the author has obviously mapped out the entire worlds and lives of his characters in his mind, the result being that they are really believable characters, despite the fact they live in a London where magic and spirits abound - it is truly stunning. It has all the ingredients to set the world of childrens books alight - maybe this will finally be the book that lives up to the billing of "the next Harry Potter"? I have watched with interest over the last few months as book after book has been labelled "Better than Potter", or "Hotter than Potter", but I haven't seen anything that comes close to the appeal and imagination of Rowlings works...........but this may be the one that finally earns the crown? A big claim I know, but I have enough belief in this title to dare to mention them both in the same breath....something I haven't done for any other childrens literature since Philosophers Stone.

To quote......."The sulphur cloud contracted into a thick column of smoke that vomited forth thin tendrils.....There was a barely perceptible pause. The two yellow staring eyes materialized in the heart of the smoke.

Hey, it was his first time. I wanted to scare him.

When the 5,000 year old djinni Bartimaeus is summoned by Nathaniel, a young magician's apprentice, he expects to have to do nothing more taxing than a few simple illusions. But Nathaniel is a precocious talent and has something more dangerous in mond: revenge.

Against his will, Bartimaeus is packed off to steal the powerful Amulet of Samarkand from Simon Lovelace, a master magician of unrivalled ruthlessness and ambition. Befoer long, both djinni and apprentice are caught up in a terrifying flood of magical intrigue, murder and rebellion.

Set in a modern day London controlled by magicians, this hilarious, electrifying thriller will enthrall readers of all ages."

The film rights to the book have already been sold, and apparently the screenplay is well underway - everything points to this being a runaway success!
